Santa Fe: Gateway to the Stars

September 24, 2011 at 7:59 pm

So, Val Kilmer ogled a friend of mine at the (tiny) Santa Fe airport today.

Well, okay.  It wasn't really ogling.  There was nothing creepy about it.  I guess it was more of a curious glance.  But it was definitely directed at Melinda, or at least her toenail polish, and it was definitely definitely Val Kilmer.

I thought that was pretty neat.  Melinda, who apparently has never seen Real Genius, didn't quite seem to appreciate the magnitude of the occasion.  I (who totally cannot quote scenes from that movie by heart) was more excited about it.

It's hard for me to imagine how strange and, well, intrusive it must be when you're easily recognized by so many people.  At least I didn't make a big deal about it like the baggage claim guy, who made a point of welcoming new arrivals by loudly mentioning there was a "famous movie star" in the airport.  I don't blame Kilmer for heading straight out of the terminal and through The Doors to where his ride waited.  (See what I did there?)

That's my only encounter with a Hollywood celebrity here in the Land of Enchantment so far.  But it's appropriate that it should be Val Kilmer; he was, allegedly, planning to run for governor at one point.  Coming from the state that put Jesse "The Body" Ventura in its governor's mansion, that wouldn't faze me in the least.

Ha! Oddly enough I just re-watched "Wonderland" last week. Also, in re your Doors pun:

Somehow I missed that critical piece of the Kilmer oeuvre!

I am insanely jealous. Val Kilmer is one of my favorites--ever since my crush on him as Iceman in TOP GUN and my dad's insistence that we watch THUNDERHEART over and over again (he works with a lot of reservations--my dad, not Val...though maybe Val does too). Plus, I must watch Val Kilmer at least once a month in TOP SECRET. Either that title is a favorite here in Germany or the rights to play it are really cheap. Tell your friend Melinda that she now has bragging rights for the rest of her life.

Wow, I forgot all about TOP SECRET. There was a period in high school when we rented that (back in the days of VHS rentals) all the time. I'm delighted to think it's getting so much airtime, and in Germany, of all places. Tell your friend Melinda that she now has bragging rights for the rest of her life. That's exactly what I told her. She didn't seem to believe me.
