The Cambist and Lord Iron: A Fairy Tale of Economics

April 28, 2008 at 6:23 pm

The best reading I've ever attended was at Bubonicon, two years ago, when Daniel Abraham read his novelette, The Cambist and Lord Iron: A Fairy Tale of Economics.

It's now up for a Hugo award, and deservedly so. Stop what you're doing right now and go read Daniel's story. Seriously. It's that good.

You'll thank me.

Daniel workshopped The Cambist at Rio Hondo a couple of years ago. I'll be up there in a couple of weeks, and the story I'm struggling to write for the workshop was, in fact, partially inspired by The Cambist.

I hope Daniel enjoys my homage, The Money-Changer Guy and King Aluminum.

I read that one in The Year's Best - it's a wonderful story.

It is. Absolutely. I kind of turn green with envy whenever I think about it. It might be one of my all-time favorite pieces of short fiction.
