This Is Warfare in the Future

January 23, 2011 at 1:08 pm

This story about the Stuxnet worm is amazing.  Even though the article is somewhat conjectural in nature, it still leaves me feeling just a little bit mind-blown.

When I was little, I couldn't wait for "the future" to arrive.  Much of the credit for that goes to the Jetsons; my childhood vision of the future mostly involved flying cars.  (Didn't everybody's?)

I never thought about what the future would mean for warfare and espionage.  And I certainly never imagined that these things would be waged via computer.

I've been following the Stuxnet story over on Bruce Schneier's blog (http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2010/10/stuxnet.html). Getting to this point where we seem to have a pretty good understanding of what the worm does and who sent it out has been a pretty interesting piece of computer forensics. Some pretty high stakes actions going on here.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll go check it out. I like to see what Schneier has to say about things like this. Don't know why I never thought to go take a look on this topic. I found out a couple of years ago that a writer I know is very good friends with Schneier. I was pretty impressed (and still am).
