Praise for the
Milkweed Triptych
"A major talent... I can't wait to see more."
—George R. R. Martin
"Mad English warlocks battling twisted Nazi psychics? Yes please, thank you. Tregillis's debut has a white-knuckle plot, beautiful descriptions, and complex characters-- an unstoppable Vickers of a novel."
Cory Doctorow on Bitter Seeds
"Ian Tregillis triumphantly concludes his astonishing, brilliant, pulse-pounding debut trilogy, The Milkweed Triptych."
Cory Doctorow on Necessary Evil
"Tregillis' conclusion of the Milkweed Triptych is the pièce de résistance of the series. Necessary Evil is a perfect marriage of science fiction, fantasy and alternate history."
RT Book Reviews (4.5 stars, Top Pick) on Necessary Evil
"Darkly fascinating…A thoroughly fascinating conclusion to an imaginative tour de force."
Kirkus on Necessary Evil
"A cross between the devious, character-driven spy fiction of early John le Carré and the mad science fantasy of the X-Men... Despite the jaw-dropping backdrop and oblique plotting, the narrative is driven by character and personal circumstance...
Grim indeed, yet eloquent and utterly compelling."
—Kirkus on The Coldest War
"The characters come alive via [Tregillis's] imaginative dialogue and his storyline will keep readers spellbound and on the edge of their seats with an intense sci-fi/alternate history thriller plot."
RT Book Reviews (4.5 stars, Top Pick) on The Coldest War
"Well-drawn characters and a feel for time and place make this an excellent journey into an alternate Britain."
—Library Journal on Bitter Seeds
"Engrossing... Tregillis ably mixes cold war paranoia with his mythology."

Somewhere, Kage Baker is Laughing
Tuesday, November 9 2010, 02:03 PM

Somebody pointed me to this news about a mysterious missile launch that happened off the Los Angeles coast on Monday.

Officially, anyway, and so far, nobody is stepping forward about this.  The DoD, Navy, and Air Force claim no knowledge of the object or its origin. The FAA claims no knowledge of the incident.  Vandenberg Air Force Base and the Naval Air Station at Point Mugu both deny responsibility.

I'd be worried that it was a test by an Iranian stealth sub, or that the Giant Pacific Octopus has finally made its move, if not for one line in the article that caught my attention:

"A KCBS news helicopter spotted what appeared to be a missile traveling through the sky northwest of Catalina Island, about 35 miles west of Los Angeles."  (Emphasis added.)

Hmmm... Mysterious lights in the sky over Catalina Island?  Sounds like Doctor Zeus, Incorporated is up to something.

Kage Baker wrote some of my favorite stuff since the late 90s, and I was deeply, deeply saddened by her way-too-early passing. (Not as much, I'm sure, as the pain suffered by her surviving loved ones, to whom my heart goes out.)  But I like to think that she wasn't really taken from us so early.  It's better than accepting the cruel irony that this amazingly gifted writer, who wrote such wonderful stories and novels about immortals, would die so young.

The Company has its secrets, and moves in mysterious ways.  So I prefer to believe that Literature Preservationist Baker is out there somewhere, and will be for a long, long time.  And somewhere, right now, she's watching the sky over Santa Catalina and laughing.
