Well, golly. This is a lovely way to close out the year.
It’s that time of year when many folks are putting together their best-of-2012 reading lists. And, gosh, several of those lists include The Coldest War.
The venerable Pat of Pat’s Fantasy Hotlist puts it on the top of his list. Kirkus also calls it one of the best of 2012, as do the discerning readers behind Bookworm Blues and Superhero Novels.
I’m delighted that people have been enjoying the book. It’s no secret that The Coldest War suffered some birthing pains before making its way into the world. So it’s wonderful (and no small relief) to know that it found an audience. It’s a wonderful way to lay the troubles to rest. All’s well that ends well, right?
But enough patting myself on the back. I have more books to write, and I have to try harder if I want to improve.
Which is a bit of a challenge some days. Such as today, when insomnia has me by the throat.
Doesn’t surprise me; ’twas a damn fine book. It even made mine on Tor.com π http://bit.ly/TXRu2B
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: golly!
I think this is very well deserved. I really enjoyed Bitter Seeds, but The Coldest War seemed like a step up even over that. I wonder if the extra time and extra editor helped give just that little extra bit. If so, maybe all novels should do that. ?? π Good job in any case.
There’s a list that comes out in March on which I’m thinking this should be.
Congrats! But to be honest, I can’t wait to read all the ones you haven’t even written yet so you better get started.. *wink*
Absolutely, Steve– we really did try our best to take advantage of the extra time caused by the delays. There was a very bright silver lining to all the scheduling problems, because when my new editor came aboard she brought a very sharp pair of eyes and terrific instincts, and she really helped me to improve the book. Furthermore, the delays meant that when we finally started the editorial process on Coldest War, I had more distance from the manuscript than I normally do. In a weird way I’m almost sorry I can’t give that much scrutiny to everything I do! Anyway, I’m really happy that you enjoyed it.
And thanks, Barb! I’m chipping away at them…
