Recently I’ve been listening to a lot of Rasputina. And kicking myself that I didn’t see their live performance (about 3 miles from my house, damn it) when they came through Santa Fe last year. Curse my hermit nature.
Because who doesn’t love a gothy rock band with cellos? Especially one that writes songs inspired by J.G. Ballard stories?
I especially enjoy their devotion to historical accuracy.
Because, as everybody knows, antediluvian giants had double rows of teeth lining their massive jaws.
I love that you love Rasputina. This makes me inordinately happy. “Transylvanian Concubine” is one of my favorite songs, and I love listening to them when I need to be in that perfect “paranormal mindset”.
I’d heard of Rasputina a long time ago but somehow thought it wouldn’t be my cuppa. Only after that Tor.com post did I check them out, to quickly find they were very much my cuppa.
I love “Transylvanian Concubine”, “Olde Dance”, “Humankind, As the Sailor”, and “Holocaust of Giants”.
Oh, and “The Donner Party”.
And “Utopian Society”.
And “Snow-Hen of Austerlitz”. And…
Man, I wish I’d gone to see them live.
For another distinctive take on the cello, check out Apocalyptica, a “cello metal” band from Finland. Heavy metal on cellos is a marvelous mashup but it somehow works — their cover of Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters” is hauntingly beautiful.
One of the more interesting live shows I’ve attended, and one of the more unusual crowds — lots of metalheads with more than a few philharmonic types.
Your posts, sir, are always apocalyptic– in the original, “revelatory,” sense of the word.
And speaking of apolcalyptic(a)… Wow. The very concept sets my bones aquiver.
