I am extremely excited that my first non-Milkweed novel, and my second novel for 2013, hits shelves in less than two weeks! So I’ll probably be talking about Something More Than Night a fair bit over the next few weeks.
I can’t help it. In some ways it’s my favorite book of anything I’ve written, and I’m just plum thrilled to see it finally making its way into the world.
So I was overjoyed when Kirkus included Something More Than Night in its list of the best SFF novels of 2013.
It’s amazing and humbling to see the book listed among such august company, too: Gaiman, Stross, Wolfe, and not to mention fellow New Mexico SFF writer Phillipa Bornikova.
Speaking of Kirkus, I recently chatted with Amy Goldschlager about the new book. A nice summary of our wide-ranging conversation has been posted here.
I’m proud of this book, and I hope like crazy that it finds an audience. December releases are tricky, and I worry about it falling through the cracks at the end of the year—especially since so many outlets (*cough* Goodreads *cough*) are already assembling their list of 2013 favorites before all the 2013 books have been published. Which, let’s be honest, is a little annoying.
I’ve been looking forward treading these dark streets for a long time now. Every new little bit I see is making it sound even more intriguing than the last.
Thanks, Steve. I hope it’s worth it, and that I don’t talk it up too much…
My wife and I have had this book in our pre-ordered list on Amazon since August; we are still disputing who is going to be able to read it first.
Gosh… I’m not sure I wrote a book worthy of marital strife! But I appreciate the pre-order very much!
Excellent news, Ian! Congratulations on making the list and I’m not sure if anything can make me more excited to read the book. Now just to wait a bit longer for the release.
Thank you very much, Brendan! I hope it hasn’t oversold the book to you 🙂 I really hope you enjoy it.
The book sounds like it would have some things in common with Tad Williams’ Bobby Dollar books (I’ve only read the first one, The Dirty Streets of Heaven). Was that an influence?
One of you should read it aloud to the other. (Or take turns.)
Nope. I had the seed idea for this book over 20 years ago, and all throughout the writing of the Milkweed Triptych books I had planned that this would be my next project. So I was deep into the planning for Something More Than Night when I found out Tad Williams (whose work I enjoy quite a bit) had an angel detective novel coming out.
I haven’t read the Bobby Dollar books (I’d only heard about the first one). I’d like to, but I’ll hold off a while longer as I have more thoughts about the world of SMTN that I’d like to let simmer without outside influence a while longer.
A best book of 2013 and it ain’t even out yet. That’s what I call burnin’ down the house. Congrats.
Looking forward to it, Ian!
Thanks, Terry!
Thank you, Denne. I hope you enjoy it!
It’s a race now! I’ve had my pre-order eBook order in for awhile and through fast typing I won an arc on tor.com last night. I can sense them racing towards me, because it’s our birthday … yes it is and we wants it …
Cough, ah, pay no attention, just eating some cave fish over here.
What has it gots in itses e-reader, Precious? Congratulations on your win!
