Now that Bubonicon 43 has come to a successful conclusion, that brings an end to this month’s gauntlet of reunions and conventions. I’ll try to get back to regular posting on the blog again… After all, there are so many inane and boring topics I haven’t posted about yet.
I’ll try to think of new ones soon.
In the meantime, though, Bubonicon was a blast and a half. I make no claims about the merits of my weekend stint as toastmaster, but I can at least take comfort in knowing that I won’t go down in history as the guy who permanently destroyed Bubonicon. I only wish I’d had more time to hang out with so many great people. (I tried to be somewhat responsible so that I didn’t blow out my voice prior to introducing my friend Steve Leigh at his Guest of Honor presentation on Sunday.) Man, what a good time.
And it was cool to see how many people had come from out of town to join the fun. My friends Ceridwen and Richard came all the way from Minneapolis (he of 3232 Design fame, she of TigerOx fame), but that’s nothing compared to the folks who came from Great Britain and even Australia. (The relative proximity of the Reno Worldcon helped in that regard.) Folks came from the Bay area, and Kansas City (hi Terry, hi Brent) and a large contingent of the wonderful folks from Portales made the trek, too.
And, of course, there were dozens of local fans and writers.
Such as Steven Gould, who, while moderating a panel on eBooks and the future of publishing, felt compelled to make this doodle after I commented that “my heart is a shriveled little raisin”:
And I almost forgot to mention one of the coolest things of all from Bubonicon– imagine my surprise (and delight) to find that Tor ran a full-page ad in the program book for Bitter Seeds and the forthcoming The Coldest War, complete with the new cover art. Shiny!
There is hope.
If you soak raisins in gin, they will swell and reconstitute. Then eating just six a day will return you to a state of humanity.
Oh, wait — that is a much-vaunted cure for arthritis.
Well, maybe the lesson to be learned here is that gin will be the cure for the arthritis in your soul.
That rings of sympathetic magic. Which, as I think we all know, is the only kind of magic that actually works.
My soul _is_ rather creaky…
Ian, it was lovely to meet you at Renovation. Hopefully we’ll get to hang out a bit at World Fantasy.
You have the most gorgeous website that I’ve ever seen. Really enchanting. I confess to spending a bit too much time playing on it, just now.
Looking forward to The Coldest War. π
Cheers,
Mary
Likewise, Mary! I’m looking forward to World Fantasy. I like that convention quite a bit.
And thanks very much for the kind words about the website! Richard Mueller of 3232 Design is the mad genius behind the art and design. (Ask the homunculus about the Chronicle of Sorrows π
I hope you enjoy Coldest War, when it arrives.
Ian, Science has reported the finding of a new species of human.
Homo narrativus
You are one.
Peace, Bob
Thanks, Bob. That’s much better than being Australo-awkward-ithecus, which is the branch of the family tree I’d assigned to myself!
