Which is just an annoying way for me to mention that the copyedited manuscript for The Coldest War has been turned in. So the publication process continues to move forward. Hooray!
Just as with the editorial notes, which made for a significantly stronger book, the copyediting has made the manuscript much cleaner and clearer. I’ve discovered that no matter how clean I think a manuscript is when I turn it in, it always needs the attention of a professional copyeditor. It’s quite a relief knowing there are so many people involved in creating this book. Every step makes it better than it was before.
Lesson learned from this go-round? Don’t get cute with the foreign translations, Tregillis, unless you want to spend a lot of time double- and triple-checking things with multiple experts.
Hooray! Let me know when it’s time to camp out in front of Barnes & Noble. I bought a tent and some survival gear and I will get my hands on this book… and a print copy of Bitter Seeds, because mine is the Kindle edition and I can’t stick it on the bookshelf where I put all the things Famous People I Know wrote.

Adrienne, I would recommend pitching that tent now. Definitely prior to Thanksgiving, at the latest. That way you’ll be guaranteed a copy when the book comes out next summer. Assuming that particular B&N carries the book at all. But better safe than sorry, right? It’s not like Oklahoma has cold winters. (Shouldn’t that be the ‘Random People I Know From the Internet’ shelf? There, fixed it for you.)
Steve, I’m glad I’m not the only person who has that experience. It seems like no matter how carefully I go over something and fix it, as soon as I show it to my coworkers they say, “Why does your calculation have?” Gah.

Bitter Seeds, very good, involving story, memorable characters, recommended it to others. Made me want more — definitely looking forward to The Coldest War.
But to urge people to “pitch a tent” in advance of the release you must be pretty freakin’ confident that it is freakin’ major awesome. Hubris, or warranted?

Speaking of triple checking things, I see CERN announced that they may have sent neutrinos FTL. Either this is the coolest thing in this century or somebodies clock is off.
I do see they are asking for other people to repeat their results, so, no we aren’t the only ones that sort of thing happens to. 🙂
If I were the PI on an experiment that obtained such a result, I probably wouldn’t go to the press before the work had been replicated, peer-reviewed, and published. But that’s just me…
I dunno. Seems some folks prefer the Pons and Fleischmann method.

Honestly, my greatest fear is that the book proves entirely NOT worth the extra-long wait, and everybody says, “I waited how long for this piece of crap?!?”
It’s the kind of anxiety that’ll keep a person up at night.
