A Conversation with Charlie Stross

Posted on February 8, 2013January 8, 2025 by eidolon

To celebrate this week’s UK release of The Coldest War, the folks at Orbit Books recently asked if I’d like to interview Charles Stross about his excellent Laundry series.  (I think they knew it was a slam dunk, since I’m a fan of the series and not above begging copies of Laundry novels from them).  Charlie was game for it, too.  Since the Laundry and Milkweed series reside in a similar neighborhood — after all, to put it rather broadly, we’re both writing about British spy organizations that contend with occult forces, albeit very differently — it turned into a fun conversation.

Our wide-ranging interview/discussion about espionage, the Cold War, the occult, and plush Cthulhu bedroom slippers is posted here.

NOW OUT in the UK: THE COLDEST WAR

Posted on February 7, 2013January 8, 2025 by eidolon

Thanks to the great folks at Orbit Books, the second book of the Milkweed Triptych, The Coldest War, is now out in the UK!

(And to celebrate, 2000 AD is giving away 5 copies of both Bitter Seeds & The Coldest War in their February 6 print issue!)

It’s very exciting to see this book finally make its way across the pond.  (And check out that fantastic cover art!  Both editions of this book, UK and US, have been favored with terrific covers.)

I’m very pleased that The Coldest War received such a warm welcome when it hit shelves here in the US this past summer.  I hope this release brings it into the hands of even more readers, and that folks enjoy the continuing (mis?)adventures of Will, Marsh, Klaus, and whatsherface.

Clarion Is Accepting Applications for the Class of 2013

Posted on January 27, 2013January 8, 2025 by eidolon

I just received this reminder in my email: the Clarion Writers’ Workshop is accepting applications for the class of 2013.  The application period is open through March 1.  (And it opened in December, though I neglected to mention that at the time.)  Also open for applications right now are Clarion West, Odyssey, and Taos Toolbox!

The lineup of instructors at each of these workshops is, as ever, phenomenal.  I would encourage anybody who wants to become serious about their writing to consider a residential workshop, whether it be Odyssey, Taos, or one of the Clarions  (which includes Clarion South, may it find its feet again soon).

Holy Smokes! Cover Art for Something More Than Night

Posted on January 23, 2013January 8, 2025 by eidolon

A while back (almost a year ago!) I posted about my first post-Milkweed novel, Something More Than Night.  I’m very excited about this book.  Thanks to my excellent editor, it’s looking fairly polished now and is starting to make its way through the production process.

Which means, among other things, that it now has cover art!  Which has been unveiled in a cool post on Tor.com.

Battle of the Books, Summer 2012

Posted on January 10, 2013January 8, 2025 by eidolon

Well, gosh, this is a swell surprise.  I wish every week came with such an abundance of good book news.

Anyhow, Fantastic Reviews has a blog, and on this blog they run various good-humored brackets comparing various books against one another.  To my complete and utter astonishment, The Coldest War somehow ended up on the top of the heap for the Summer 2012 books.  Golly!

TCW has also appeared on a list of Fantasy Book Critic‘s Top 10 reads of 2012.  So hooray for that, too!

And speaking of TCW: a reminder that it will be out from the terrific folks at Orbit UK next month!
